La recherche scientifique dans le monde musulman

La revue scientifique Nature, dans son numero du 02 Novembre, a consacre un dossier special a la recherche scientifique dans les pays islamiques. Le dossier presente plusieurs analyses interessantes sur la production scientifique des pays membres de l'Organization de la Conference Islamique, et sur le futur de la recherche dans le monde musulman. On notera les statistiques sur les nombres d'articles publies: malgre une disparite evidente entre les moyens financiers d'un pays comme le Maroc par rapport a un pays comme l'Arabie Saoudite, le nombre d'articles scientifiques publies recemment dans ces deux pays est tres proche. J'ai aussi ete assez etonne d'apprendre que le Maroc figure parmi les 25 nations qui depensent le plus sur l'enseignement a l'echelle mondiale:

"Although the science budgets of the OIC countries are all near the bottom of the world league, their spending on education is more variable. Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Yemen's relative education budgets are among the world's highest. Morocco, Tunisia and Iran also spend respectable sums on education. All six were among the world's top 25 spenders on education in 2002."

Et pourtant... s'agissant de recherche scientifique, la production de la plupart des pays musulmans est parmi les plus faibles qui soient (avec quelques exceptions, comme la Turquie ou la Malaisie). La cause ? Pour les editeurs de Nature,

"Part of the explanation lies in spending priorities. Many OIC countries, particularly the richest, spend more on armaments than on science, education or health. Six of the world's top ten military spenders as a share of public spending are OIC countries: Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Syria and Oman (each spending above 7% of GDP on arms in 2003). African OIC countries, in contrast, tend to spend proportionately less on the military."

Dans le Monde du 4 Septembre dernier, interessant portrait de Gideon Levy, courageux journaliste israelien a Haaretz, qui est parmi les rares en Israel qui osent raconter la realite de l'occupation telle qu'elle est:

"Devenu journaliste, durant la première Intifada (1987-1993), son photographe lui dit qu'une Palestinienne, partie accoucher dans une maternité de Jérusalem-Est, avait été refoulée par trois barrages différents. "Je n'y ai pas cru. Des sadiques à un barrage, c'était possible. Trois barrages, non." Il enquête. C'était vrai. Au troisième barrage, la femme avait accouché dans le taxi, puis supplié les soldats de la laisser là mais d'emmener son bébé à l'hôpital. "Ça aussi, ils l'ont refusé." Elle a fait le parcours à pied. A l'arrivée, l'enfant était mort.

"Là, j'ai compris que quelque chose d'épouvantable nous arrivait. Nos jeunes ne sont pas des monstres. La plupart mettraient la main à la poche pour les victimes d'un séisme au Mexique. Pourquoi, dès qu'ils font face aux Palestiniens, se déshumanisent-ils ? Parce que la routine de l'occupation les pourrit, les amène à cesser de voir dans les Arabes des hommes comme eux." Depuis, il raconte, sans relâche, "ce cancer qui nous ronge, plus menaçant que tous les terrorismes : l'occupation d'un autre peuple". Sa grande fierté : en vingt ans, pas un seul de ses récits n'a été infirmé. De l'ébranlement qui saisit Israël depuis l'échec militaire au Liban, il dit que c'est "une bonne chose". Après "sixans de coma" dus à l'Intifada, "notre société se pose enfin des questions sur elle-même". Il craint, pourtant, que les mobilisations actuelles en Israël ne profitent à la droite dure, "tant est ancré chez nous le culte fou de la force".

C'est parce qu'il se sent israélien qu'une "culpabilité profonde" l'habite : "Je ne peux pas supporter que tant d'actes inqualifiables soient commis en mon nom." La solitude lui pèse, mais moins que l'hostilité qu'il suscite. Des courriels comme "Merci pour votre indispensable soutien", signé "Adolph Hitler", sont son pain quotidien. Et puis, est-il vraiment si seul ? Lorsque l'on tape Gideon Lévy sur Google, il n'y a pas loin d'un million d'entrées..."

Aujourd'hui marque le premier anniversaire de notre blog! Un grand MERCI a tous ceux qui nous ont tenu compagnie durant cette premiere annee. Il y a eu des hauts et des bas, mais, tout compte fait, nous pensons que l'experience a ete positive pour nous deux, et nous esperons aussi avoir reussi a apporter un espace de debat constructif et des points de vue interessants a nos lecteurs. S'il y a un regret, c'est de ne pas avoir reussi a interesser plus de lecteurs du Maroc et du reste du Monde Arabe: la majorite de nos lecteurs sont des expatries comme nous. Ceci dit, nous invitons nos lecteurs qui en auraient envie a nous faire part d'eventuelles critiques de ce blog en vue de contribuer a l'ameliorer dans le futur.

Du mecenat en Amerique

Lu, dans le NYT d'aujourd'hui, un article relatant que la veuve d'un avocat New Yorkais avait offert une donation de 200 millions (je dis bien: millions) de dollars a Columbia University.

Une question qui vient immediatement a l'esprit: pourquoi est-ce qu'on ne voit jamais ce genre de chose, je veux dire des donations charitables ou mecenes de sommes importantes d'argent (meme a l'echelle de quelques millions de dirhams), dans nos pays ? Pourtant, ce ne sont pas les richards qui manquent, chez nous.

Je pense personnellement que la culture du mecenat et des donations charitables ne s'est jamais vraiment developee dans nos contrees, meme si l'Islam en fait insiste beaucoup sur l'aspect associatif dans l'organisation de la societe. Les businessmen de chez nous evoluent dans un monde impitoyable, ou le gros poisson devore le petit, et ou pour faire fortune on doit immanquablement ecraser sans etats d'ames ceux qui sont plus faibles que nous. En plus, une majorite de gens professent cette idee que, de toutes les facons, c'est l'Etat qui doit se charger de tout et payer toutes les factures. Meme en Europe, on ne voit jamais des donations charitables d'un montant aussi important, et j'oserai avancer que de pareilles donations sont particulieres a l'Amerique, et qu'a vrai dire, je trouve cela plutot impressionnant.

On Chirac's visit to Saudi Arabia

Have you guys seen this pic ? It was on all major arab newspapers last week-end (Saturday or Sunday, I don't quite remember). It shows President Chirac of France and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia engaging in a traditional Saudi dance, sword in hand. I especially liked the smile on Chirac's face: the President was indeniably having a great time playing with his sword :)))

Regarding the dance itself, The Angry Arab has a funny comment about it in his blog. Enjoy! :))))

On Ashura

A week ago, the Islamic world has celebrated the starting of the month of Moharram, the first month of the muslim lunar calendar. In Morocco, and in many other (mostly sunni) parts of the muslim world, the first ten days of Muharram are festive days. On Ashura day, which is the tenth day of Muharram, people will buy sweets, nuts and candy, and offer gifts and toys to their children. They will even congratulate one another by saying: "Mabrouk lewasher", and on Ashura night (or the night before) youngsters will festively burn tires and and throw water to one another. Yet, in other (mostly shia) parts of the muslim world, the first ten days are days of mourning, sadness and tears.

Have you ever thought about the contrast ? Happiness on one side, sadness on the other. Mourning on one side, festive mood on the other. Who is right ? Who is wrong ? Why are the shia mourning ? Why are some sunnis happy ? Did you ever wonder ? Did you ever care ?

On the State of the Union address

In today's issue of Slate magazine, there was an interesting article about the State of the Union address, the annual speech that the President of the United States delivers in front of Congress, where he discusses his political agenda, both foreign and domestic, for the upcoming year. The address is aired on all major american television networks (for those of you who are not in the US and would like to hear what it's like, c-span will broadcast it live tonight on the internet, starting at 9:00pm eastern time).

I wonder what President Bush will say tonight about the results of the legislative elections in Palestine last week. Hamas has acted in such a measured fashion after its victory that it is hard to guess what the Administration's position will be. All we can do is wait and see what happens tonighht. In the meantime, I can only recommend that you go through the Slate article, as it gives an unusual (and, for me, a rather original and quite refreshing) perspective on the address.

A l’occasion du nouvel an du calendrier musulman (l'Hégire), Oumma.com publie un article intéressant sur la signification et l’importance en Islam de la Hijra à Medine. La Hijra, précise l’article, fut, d’un point de vue stratégique, d’une importance capitale, puisque sans elle, le Prophète (pbuh) et ses compagnons auraient eu plus de difficulté à gagner les coeurs des autres tribus arabes. Ces dernieres, en effet, auraient jalousé Quraich d’avoir eu la primeur du message de l’Islam. La Hijra a également une signification religieuse profonde puisqu’elle était le résultat d’un ordre de Dieu et qu’elle signifiait un abandon à Lui. Omar avait vu juste.

Billionnaire seeking virgin bride

In yesterday's New York Times, there was an interesting story about how young, rich Chinese entrepreneurs are looking for brides these days. I must confess that I was quite surprised to hear that some of these rich businessmen insisted that their would-be bride be virgin. Rich people, even in my part of the world, tend to have a rather "modern", hedonistic lifestyle, and could not care less about such old-fashioned ideas as chastity or virginity. It's quite refreshing to see that permissive moral attitudes from western culture have not pervaded the Chinese mentality, as of yet.

On a side note: in today's NYT, there was a story about the phenomenal growth rate of the Chinese economy. Have a look: it's quite interesting!

It seems like anyone in this country who dares to speak out for the legitimate rights of the palestinian people will end up on some kind of "black list". Freedom of thought? Tell me about it!

As 2005 is getting to a close, newspapers and magazines all over the world are drawing lists of the most influential personalities of the year. The most famous of such a list is the one made by the editors of Time magazine, who this year picked Bill and Melinda Gates and rock star Bono for their charity work. Pope Benedict is his own man when it comes to dressing.

Just days before Christmas, Benedict showed up at his weekly public audience in St. Peter's Square wearing a fur-trimmed stocking cap that could have passed for a Santa Claus hat.

Earlier this month, he made another fashion statement -- donning a red velvet cape trimmed in ermine for the traditional papal visit to the statue of the Madonna near the Spanish Steps that marks the beginning of Rome's Christmas season.

Coming after gossip about his wearing Gucci sunglasses and bright red Prada loafers, the vintage styles have turned Benedict into something of a fashion celebrity.

"Those red shoes have made quite an impression," said Vatican historian Alberto Melloni.

Karim says: In the few weeks following the election of Joseph Ratzinger to the Papal office, commentators all over the world started to scrutinize the new pope's record, and to speculate about possible similarities and differences between him and the late pope John Paul II. Now, we know for sure about at least one difference: while the former pope's demeanor inspired modesty and may have reminded the believer of higher, divinely inspired values of charity and compassion, pope Benedict XVI has adopted a fashionable style which, by contrast, may inspire more attraction to material artifacts which have an essentially wordly nature. With the passing away of John Paul II, the Roman Catholic Church has lost perhaps the best representative it has ever been able to produce, in today's pop-culture-dominated world, of the spiritual values it endeavors to teach, and I am afraid it is not about to truly replace him any time soon.

Jihad al-Khazen has started a blog (a few months ago, I am a little behind schedule here :). I must say that I have mixed feelings about this fellow. He often repeats himself, which is a little boring, but quite understandable given that it is not easy at all to write an opinion piece (for al-Hayat) on a daily basis and come up with something original every time. I also find him not critical enough of countries like Saudi Arabia. However, as a veteran journalist and astute observer, and as someone who knows very well both arab mentality and the workings of arab politics, and who has the courage to say a few things (about arabs and muslims) that many others in our region won't dare to discuss, he is someone whose articles, from time to time, will have some great insights and analysis. His blog is not as interactive as, say, Xavier Ternisien's was, but you may still want to have a look and leave him some feedback :)

Organs of slain Palestinian boy donated to Israeli patients

The parents of a Palestinian boy shot to death by Israeli soldiers has donated his organs to three Israeli children waiting for transplants.

Ismail Khatib said the decision to donate his son Ahmed's organs was rooted in his memories of his brother, who died at age 24 while waiting for a liver transplant, and in his family's desire to help others regardless of their nationality.

"I don't mind seeing the organs in the body of an Israeli or a Palestinian," Khatib said. "In our religion, God allows us to give organs to another person and it doesn't matter who the person is."

Ahmed, 12, was shot by Israeli soldiers Thursday while they were conducting a raid in the West Bank town of Jenin. The soldiers said the boy was carrying a toy rifle and they mistook him for a militant.

Karim says: I find it truely amazing that these parents have accepted to donate the organs of their son, who has been murdered by Israeli soldiers, to Israeli patients. Now, that's one very humane and magnanimous act of generosity. I am totally impressed.

If I might ask: suppose that you were in the same situation as one of these parents (God forbid), would you have acted in such a magnanimous way ? I personally am having a very hard time answering this question...

Au sujet du recent tremblement de terre au Pakistan

D'abord, il y a eu le tsunami dans le sud-est asiatique. Les sheikhs de l'inquisition on en profite pour condamner et maudire, et pour nous rappeler qu'ils ont, eux aussi, a l'image de certains tele-evangelistes de ce cote-ci de l'atlantique, le privilege d'interpreter la volonte divine. Ensuite, il y a eu Katrina, et certains en ont profite encore pour y voir une punition de Dieu pour les crimes de l'Amerique en Iraq (certains rabbins juifs y ont apparemment vu une punition pour la pression que l'Amerique aurait exerce sur Israel afin d'evacuer la bande de Gaza - a chacun ses griefs).

Maintenant, cela fait pres d'un mois que la terre a tremble au Pakistan. Durant ces trois dernieres semaines, j'ai eu beau chercher dans les articles de presse, nos sheikhs et autres journalistes islamistes n'ont pas, cette fois-ci, trouve opportun d'interpreter la catastrophe naturelle comme etant une punition de Dieu.

Comme on en a deja discute sur ce blog, il n'y a rien dans le Coran ou dans le Hadith qui puisse indiquer que les catastrophes naturelles doivent necessairement etre interpretees comme une punition divine. Seulement, voila, si on devait absolument le faire, moi personnellement je serais tres tente de voir dans le seisme qui a frappe le Pakistan au debut de ce mois une punition pour le peche mortel que constitue le fait d'abriter les terroristes d'al-Qaida et leurs acolytes, qui ont souille l'image de l'islam de part le monde, et qui n'ont fait que semer la discorde et repandre la mort la ou ils ont mis les pieds.

Europe reviving 'baby slots'

For centuries, desperately poor mothers came to the Annunziata church to push their newborns into a dark slot within a wooden turntable in a convent wall. A few turns, they hoped, and their child would have a better life.

From medieval times or earlier, women across Europe resorted to systems like "the wheel" to abandon infants they were too poor or ashamed to keep.

Such arrangements were abolished more than a century ago as uncivilized. But increasingly frequent news reports about babies tossed in trash bins or into toilet bowls are prompting modern versions of "the wheel" to make a comeback on the continent.

The systems have names like "babyklappe" (baby slot) in Austria and Germany; "babyfenster" (baby window) in Switzerland and "culle per vite" (cradle for life) in Italy.

Many are sophisticated incubator-like containers that heat up when a baby is placed inside. In some cases an alarm sounds after a few minutes, giving the mother a chance to say goodbye before attendants come to fetch the baby.

Baby slots are increasingly being advocated or considered by doctors and social workers who say Europe's anti-abandonment strategies are inadequate.

ولعل أغرب ما سمعته على الشاشة من رجل دين، حديثاً عن جواز تغطية الوجه عند قضاء الحاجة، وأنه ورد عن أحد الصحابة أنه عندما يذهب إلى الخلاء يغطي وجهه!
يا جماعة، هل هذا حديث الساعة، وهل في حياة اليوم من يذهب إلى الخلاء بنفس الأسلوب والطريقة التي يذهب بها القوم قبل 15 قرناً؟ ثم ما هي القيمة الدينية والقيمية في التطرق إلى مثل هذه الموضوعات، والأمة العربية والإسلامية تعيش ظروفاً حالكة تستوجب من رجل الدين المشاركة في الهموم الكبرى التي تعيشها الأمة؟ ثم هل خلت البيوت من مشاكلها؟! وهل تنظفت الشوارع من عبث العابثين أو خلت البيوت من عابثات الليل؟

'Covered pearls': Chic fashion for Islamic women

Iman Moustafa loves the sea, but she always knew her bikini didn't conform with the rules of Islam, so each time she took a dip she would quickly cover up and pray on the beach. The guilt spoiled the fun.

"I felt as if I were fooling God," said Moustafa, 25.

The solution? La Femme.

La Femme is one of three women-only beaches at this elite northern Mediterranean resort, offering beach-goers a priceless commodity: guiltless fun. Here the veiled, conservative and shy can strip down to skimpy bikinis safe from God's disapproval and intruding male eyes.

The beaches, about 60 miles west of Alexandria, are part of a growing business that caters to the new class of religious Egyptians who are hip, rich and young. These secluded strips of sand are an attempt to reconcile liberal and conservative, worldly and heavenly, fun and piety.

At ordinary beaches, where the sexes mix and any swimwear is allowed, religious women face a challenge. They must get up early to find a secluded spot. Some take to the waves fully clothed or wearing unrevealing Islamic swimsuits. Moustafa all but gave up the beach altogether when she donned the veil four years ago.

Then women-only beaches came along.

The Islamic revival has spawned chic fashion stores catering specifically to veiled women. Makeup artists advertise new trends in tying head scarves. Video clips of religious songs feature handsome male models.

Iman Moustafa says her veil makes her feel like "a precious and covered pearl."

Her bikini, she says, is strictly for La Femme.

Vendredi dernier a la mosquee, j'ai ete content d'apprendre que les membres de la MSA ("Muslim Student Association") locale se sont portes volontaires pour prendre en charge plusieurs dizaines d'orphelins, pour la plupart des victimes du seisme au Pakistan. Vivre en occident donne aux gens l'opportunite, moyennant une contribution relativement modeste (une trentaine de dollars par mois environ), d'aider un orphelin d'un pays pauvre a avoir acces a l'eau potable, a des habits chauds l'hiver, et a un minimum de nourriture chaque jour. La modicite du cout de la prise en charge fait qu'adopter un orphelin reste tres a la portee, meme pour des etudiants vivant sur un budget limite. Si aujourd'hui vous avez les moyens de prendre en charge un orphelin, qu'il s'agisse d'une victime de l'une des catastrophes naturelles recentes ou bien tout simplement d'un membre de famille ou d'une connaissance dans votre pays d'origine, pourquoi attendre? Hormis le verset coranique ci-dessus, un hadith celebre stipule que celui qui prend en charge un orphelin sera tres proche du prophete au Paradis:

Ceci dit, si vous n'etes pas tres religieux, et que ca ne vous interesse pas d'etre proche de Mohammad dans une vie ulterieure, alors peut etre que vous deciderez quand meme d'aider un orphelin par "humanisme". Prendre en charge un enfant, qui de surcroit n'est pas le votre, donnera plus de saveur a votre travail, et vous fera murir plus vite :) De toutes les facons, le but essentiel de ce billet est d'informer ceux qui pourraient ne pas le savoir qu'il y a plein de formules de prise en charge d'orphelins de part le monde, que ce soit a travers des organisations islamiques ou laiques, et qu'une contribution mensuelle relativement modeste peut faire une difference dans la vie d'un orphelin de situation difficile.

Voila. C'etait ma petite plaidoirie ramadanienne en faveur des orphelins de chez nous et d'ailleurs, et je ne vous retiendrai pas plus que cela. Ce que j'ai mentionne plus haut concernait ceux qui pouvaient se passer d'un dollar ou d'un euro par jour. Si vous n'etes pas en mesure de le faire, alors vous pouvez quand-meme aider en diffusant ce message a ceux qui en auraient les moyens et qui ne savent pas...

Xavier Ternisien met fin a son blog

Je viens d'apprendre, avec un retard considerable et non sans surprise, que Xavier Ternisien, journaliste au Monde, a decide de mettre fin a son blog. Grand connaisseur des differentes mouvances de l'islam en france, Mr. Ternisien fait partie de ces rares journalistes francais qui traitent de questions ayant trait a l'islamisme de facon rationnelle et depassionnee. Sur son blog, qu'il m'arrivait de visiter de temps en temps, il faisait etat de points de vues personnels, parfois a chaud, sur les questions d'actualites ayant trait a l'islam en france, et prenait souvent le temps de repondre aux questions et commentaires des visiteurs. A vouloir faire son travail de facon honnete et professionelle, Mr. Ternisien s'est vu attaquer, a plusieurs reprises, par des pseudo-journalistes islamophobes comme Caroline Fourest, et plus recemment par le quotidien israelien Haaretz, a la suite de quoi il a decide d'arreter son blog. C'est comme ca: a chaque fois qu'une voix intelligente et credible parle de l'islam de facon respectueuse et equilibree, on s'acharne a la faire taire. Ce fut le cas hier avec Tariq Ramadan, et c'est le cas aujourd'hui avec Xavier Ternisien (pour ne citer que ces deux la; la liste etant en fait bien longue).

SEOUL, South Korea - A South Korean man who played computer games for 50 hours almost non-stop died of heart failure minutes after finishing his mammoth session in an Internet cafe, authorities said on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old man, identified only by his family name Lee, had been playing online battle simulation games at the cybercafe in the southeastern city of Taegu, police said.

Lee had planted himself in front of a computer monitor to play online games on Aug. 3. He only left the spot over the next three days to go to the toilet and take brief naps on a makeshift bed, they said.

"We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a Taegu provincial police official said by telephone.

Lee had recently quit his job to spend more time playing games, the daily JoongAng Ilbo reported after interviewing former work colleagues and staff at the Internet cafe.

After he failed to return home, Lee's mother asked his former colleagues to find him. When they reached the cafe, Lee said he would finish the game and then go home, the paper reported.

He died a few minutes later, it said.

South Korea, one of the most wired countries in the world, has a large and highly developed game industry.

Religious conversion, either from one faith to another or between different branches of the same faith, sometimes ivolves a spiritual journey that is both fulfilling and rewarding. On the personal level however, conversion has usually a dramatic and unpleasant aspect to it, as it leads to a total upheavel of one's social network of friends, the convert seeking often to distance himself from his/her original religious community. In that respect, it can be said that conversions always take a good deal of courage and conviction, even in countries which guarantee the freedom of worship. If, in addition, there is an extra psychological barrier associated with being in a state of war, then it must take an additional measure of determination to cross the line of patriotism and convert to the religion of the enemy, as did this Israeli settler who, after arguing for months with a Palestinian neighbor, finally decided that Islam was to be his deliberate choice and path. Have a look: it's quite an extraordinary story!

A en juger par l’article ci-dessous, publiée dans l’édition d’hier de Le Monde, l'industrie Halal en France est en plein essor. L’intégration du concept Halal a, sans doute, été facilitée par l’intégration antérieure du concept cacher. Quoi qu’il en soit, les industriels agroalimentaires Français ont compris qu’il était de leur intérêt économique de satisfaire leur clientèle musulmane. Tout le monde y trouve son compte, finalement.

Elle choisit une barquette de blancs de dinde à l'estragon de la marque Isla Delice, estampillée halal. L'association A votre service (AVS) a certifié le travail des sacrificateurs religieux musulmans agréés.

Amida a été attirée par les couleurs de l'emballage, inhabituelles dans ce rayon plutôt austère... Peu pratiquante, la jeune femme dit manger halal par habitude, comme elle le faisait chez sa mère. "C'est plutôt culturel" , dit-elle.

Le deuxième Salon européen de l'alimentation halal, organisé du 6 au 8 juin, à Paris, a révélé le nouveau visage de cette pratique. Près de 10 % des viandes consommées en France seraient halal, selon l'organisateur de cette manifestation, Antoine Bonnel. La consommation halal, elle, est estimée à 5 milliards d'euros en Europe. En France, elle serait en progression de 15 % par an depuis 1998, selon plusieurs estimations.

Ces chiffres sont à manier avec précaution, dans la mesure où aucun institut ne chiffre officiellement ce marché. L'extrême discrétion est également de mise chez les acteurs de la filière.

Depuis deux ans et en dehors de toute réglementation spécifique, le commerce halal prospère discrètement en France. Ce qui était jusqu'ici l'apanage des 3 000 boucheries musulmanes qui contrôlent encore 80 % des volumes intéresse désormais les industriels de l'agroalimentaire et les enseignes de la grande distribution.

Alors que la consommation alimentaire faiblit (- 2 % en 2004), tous lorgnent sur le porte-monnaie des 4 à 5 millions de musulmans vivant en France. Comme ils l'ont fait il y a quelques années pour la communauté juive (environ 600 000 personnes), industriels et distributeurs adaptent leur offre pour répondre aux prescriptions religieuses de l'islam.

"Les jeunes consommateurs musulmans se tournent vers une consommation exclusive, ils sont plus partisans du tout-halal que leurs parents" , explique Florence Bergeaud-Blackler, sociologue à l'unité d'anthropologie de l'université d'Aix-Marseille. La troisième génération issue de l'immigration maghrébine et noire-africaine veut renforcer ses "liens à l'origine" .

Dans l'hypermarché Auchan de Bagnolet, Cindy, une musulmane de 21 ans, étudiante en médecine, confie qu'elle achète un ou deux produits halal "quand son budget le lui permet" . "Pour moi, consommer du halal, c'est comme consommer du bio, j'aime le goût" , dit-elle, en regrettant les prix élevés et le choix trop restreint.

De longues listes d'ingrédients illicites (ou haram, par opposition à halal) circulent sur Internet pour informer les pratiquants. Nestlé, Unilever, Danone, qui utilisent parfois des graisses animales et des gélifiants à base de porc dans les biscuits, les plats préparés ou les yaourts, sont confrontés à des demandes de plus en plus précises.

Ces groupes ne proposent pour l'instant pas de gamme spécifique en France. Mais certains d'entre eux font quelques timides tentatives : Nestlé vend des potages Maggi halal importés d'une de ses usines marocaines. Dans les rayons, on trouve aussi des boissons gazeuses (Apla et Ifri au concentré halal) importées de Tunisie et d'Algérie, comme des raviolis Dea, et même des petits pots pour bébés qui portent la marque suisse Aslaya.

Il y a trois ans, les industriels de la viande et de la volaille (Doux, Duc, Charal, Soviba...) se sont lancés sur le marché. Aujourd'hui, ils sont en position dominante.

"Le halal ? C'est une croissance à deux chiffres depuis trois ans" , se félicite Yves Stunic, le directeur du marketing du groupe Duc qui assume, contrairement à ses concurrents, sa marque principale sur ses poulets et dindes halal. "Il n'y a pas de raison de mettre une sous-marque. Ces consommateurs ne sont pas des sous-consommateurs" , affirme-t-il. En général, la plupart des marques connues hésitent, par peur d'effrayer leur clientèle traditionnelle.

Mais, dans les abattoirs, la vie a déjà changé. Quelques usines font du tout-halal. Le plus souvent, elles réservent des créneaux horaires à cette production, tout comme pour les produits casher, destinés aux juifs.

"On nettoie l'usine entre 22 heures et 1 heure et on commence le halal vers 3 heures, sur des machines propres, sans trace de sang" , explique Hervé Simon, le directeur du marketing de Soviba, numéro 3 de la viande en France, qui produit 2 000 tonnes de steaks hachés surgelés halal par an.

Les 850 employés de cet abattoir installé au Lion-d'Angers (Maine-et-Loire) ont pris l'habitude de travailler avec les sacrificateurs agréés et de voir déambuler les contrôleurs religieux envoyés par les associations qui assurent la traçabilité religieuse, telles qu'A votre service ou Muslim Conseil International. Parfois, une vingtaine de personnes surveillent les ouvriers et apposent elles-mêmes sur les emballages les logos et les scellés.

Un choc culturel ? "Ça se passe bien, même si les conditions de travail sont difficiles, à cause du sang. Le rendement diminue aussi, explique M. Simon. De toute façon, on n'a pas le choix : si on veut faire du commerce avec eux, il faut accepter." Chez Soviba, une salle de prière a été aménagée dans l'usine.

Mais derrière cette apparente organisation, le marché est loin d'être en bon ordre. "C'est une vraie foire d'empoigne et il va falloir que tout cela s'organise" , explique Jean Prévost, consultant auprès de la grande distribution.

Deux grandes enseignes vont tester, d'ici quelques mois, dans deux hypermarchés des espaces halal de 200 à 300 m2. Elles ont besoin de produits. Des équipes marketing, logistiques, commerciales ont été constituées. "Notre plus gros problème, c'est de trouver des produits suffisamment variés et vraiment halal" , dit M. Prévost. La grande distribution a, par exemple, besoin d'un logo unique et accepté par tous les musulmans. Pas question, donc, d'ouvrir la porte à la multitude de sigles plus ou moins sérieux.

A couple from Minneapolis decided to go to Florida for a long weekend to thaw out during one particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years before. Because both had jobs they found it difficult to coordinate their travel schedules, so it was decided that the husband would fly to Florida on a Thursday, and his wife would follow him the next day. Upon arriving as planned, the husband checked into the hotel. In his room there was a computer so he decided to send his wife an e-mail back in Minneapolis. However, he accidentally left out one letter in the address, and sent the e-mail, without realizing his error. In Houston, a widow had just returned from her husband's funeral. The dearly departed was a minister who had been called home to glory following a heart attack. The widow checked her e-mail, expecting messages from relatives and friends. Upon reading the first message, she fainted. The widow's son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I've Arrived
You're probably surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send e-mails to your loved ones. I've just arrived and checked in. Notre ami Mahdi a poste dans une discussion precedente un poeme du poete iraqien Ahmad Matar que je reposte ici pour en faire beneficier les lecteurs qui n'etaient pas avec nous. Sur fond de guerre dans son pays, l'Iraq, Matar critique les muftis qui donnent des fatwas qui, plutot que de chercher a eclairer les gens sur le licite et l'illicite, sont une incitation ouverte a la haine et a la violence:

Do Arabs have a "conspiracy theory" complex?

"Just a few minutes' chat with a sophisticated Middle Easterner makes it clear how much he interprets great public issues through the prism of conspiracy theories. Whereas Westerners see a Syrian government long in conflict with Israel, he perceives Damascus as having surreptitiously worked hand in glove with the Jewish state since the 1960s. In his view, the Western powers built up Saddam Hussein, connived with him to put on Desert Storm, and provided him with the weapons to stay in powers after his defeat. Ruhollah Khomeiny may have appeared vitriolically anti-Western, but Middle Eastern interlocutors will claim this ayatollah served his British (or American) masters up to his death. And so forth." Daniel Pipes, The Hidden Hand, Middle East Fears of Conspiracy.

I don't like Daniel Pipes. I find him too biased against Islam (he seldom mentions anything positive about Islam or muslims). Nevertheless, I think the guy has a point: arabs are infected with what I would dare to call the "conspiracy theory complex". From the most illiterate to the most educated, from the secular to the religiously enclined thinkers, virtually each and everyone in the arab world will look for hidden explanations to our countries' successive failures, and ignore the glaringly clear and simple root causes of our backwardness. I was discussing the 9/11 attacks recently with an arab friend from the middle-east, who was still doubting that 9/11 has been perpetrated by al-Qaeda. His argument was that arabs are not so sophisticated as to carry out such a momentous operation, which required a great deal of coordination and attention to details, qualities that Arabs in general cruelly lack.

Karim: Yes, but a terrorism "expert" from the Arab world, Anis Nakkash (a lebanese who masterminded attacks himself in the 80's and who lives in hiding somewhere in the Middle East), when asked by al-Hayat about the attacks, said they were not highly technical given the relatively lax security measures in US airports prior to 9/11, and that they didn't require highly trained people. Besides, bin Laden himself endorsed the attacks and praised the attackers in his video-recordings broadcast on al-Jazeera!

Friend: Well, this doesn't mean at all that he actually did it! See, I agree with you that he probably would have done it if he could. The fact that he praised these poor middle east passengers who happened to by on these airplanes is just an attempt from him to get credit for these attacks and thus bolster his prestige in the arab world! You know how the arabs think! For them, what matters above all are heroic endeavors, of which 9/11 (to him) is a great example.

Karim: So, who do you think has dunit?

Friend: Well, you know, the intelligence agencies of the west are very good.

Karim: Sure, I am aware of that. But, so far, I haven't heard of any agency's operatives who commit suicide in order to carry out a given mission. Did anyone escape from one of these airplanes by parachute by any chance?

Friend: No, that's not what I meant. There are people who say that the airplane computers were either programmed or accessed remotely during flight in such a way as to put the airplanes in a head-on trajectory toward the Twin Towers and the Pentagon.

And there we go again... you see the picture? This was a very well educated person. No wonder that the average arab on the streets of Casablanca or Cairo will give credit to even wilder imaginations. Unfortunately, very few in the arab world will speak up and debunk all these conspiracy theories. So, I was pleased when yesterday I read an article in al-Hayat whose author had the courage to address this sickness of the arab mind. Any other articles or contributions on this topic will be most welcome!

An impressive little Iranian girl!

Have a look at this little Iranian girl who participated recently in a competition for the memorization of the Quran that took place in Beirut, Lebanon (note that most of the examiners are Sunni, not Shii sheikhs). And to think that there are millions of well-meaning muslims who believe that the Shia have their own version of the Quran! (Never mind the extremists who kill the Shia on a daily basis in Iraq and elsewhere on the grounds that they are "kuffar", i.e. disbelievers.)

Ils ont un sens inne des affaires, les libanais! Tout le monde connait le cas Rafik Hariri, qui d'un jeune entrepreneur de batiment dans les pays du golfe est devenu en l'espace de deux decennies l'un des plus riches milliardaires de la planete. Dans Al-Hayat d'aujourd'hui, un article sur un autre milliardaire libanais, le 4eme plus riche du monde selon Forbes Magazine.

Decidement, les libanais m'impressionneront toujours!
